In case you missed it today there was a great hangout with NASA’s Dawn crew talking about the Dawn mission. They talked about what it takes each day to fly the spacecraft and the steps they take to handle things that go wrong. They even explain what an Ion cannon is.
If you have not heard of the Dawn mission it is a spacecraft that was launched in 2007. Its mission is go observe objects in the astroid belt which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The two main targets for Dawn are the astroids/dwarf planets Vesta and Ceres.
Dawn arrived at Vesta in 2011 and took many pictures of the surface of Vesta. The spacecraft orbited Vesta for over a year and then began its course to Ceres which is still has not arrived at yet. Dawn should arrive at Ceres early next year.
